What does a Line Improvement Engineer do?

A Line Improvement Engineer delivers best-in-class planned, preventative, and corrective maintenance activities associated with cask filling and disgorging processes on the Poniel site. They are responsible for improving and implementing engineering activities to improve efficiency in all aspects of cask filling and disgorging on site. Support LEAN Accelerator programme and act as engineering lead in all cask line improvement activities 

He/She will contribute to Continuous Improvement activities at John Dewar and Sons Ltd (JDSL) / Bacardi to provide and deliver
  • Support the delivery of LEAN accelerator programme in cask filling and disgorging activities
  • Key metrics within Cask Filling and Disgorging activities are delivered.
  • Key maintenance metrics within Bulk Spirit Engineering are achieved
  • Bulk Spirit assets, equipment and engineering systems are aligned with Regulatory and Bacardi standards
  • Bulk Spirit equipment is maintained to the best possible standard to ensure availability is maximized to allow for optimal asset performance
  • Strive to improve performance in line with World Class Manufacturing standards

RESPONSIBILITIES

With our consumer at the heart your key focus will be
  • Responsible for the execution of agreed planned/corrective maintenance tasks on their shift and take an active role in improving the way we carry out maintenance. This includes logging work done so that faults/problems/defects encountered are captured in theCMMS along with parts used and time spent. 
  • the asset inspection and maintenance programme ensuring compliance with all safety statutory legislative requirements and best practices.
  • relevant quality SOP’s to ensure the first-time quality of our products, service is guaranteed when equipment is returned to production and all work is carried out to the correct engineering standards.
  • the engineering coordinator and site leadership team in the prioritisation of work orders. Recommend and advise on Preventive 
  • Maintenance improvements and spare parts requirements in order to achieve maximum availability of plant & equipment. Support plant optimisation initiatives. – particular focus on cask filling and disgorging operations
  • Where required, liaise with and support external suppliers/contractors. Support PTW requirements for any work by contractors (maintenance and projects).
  • Suggest and deliver improvements to ensure the smooth and efficient running of our assets.
  • Actively participate in Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement processes relevant to maintenance excellence and demonstrate commitment to site philosophy. 
  • Maintain work area to 5S standards. Ensure it is maintained in a safe and effective condition.
  • Be aware of all relevant team KPIs and understand how you can contribute to improving them.
  • Assist with asset projects from concept and design through to implementation, testing and final handover ensuring that asset drawings and registers are updated to reflect the changes
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement activities within Bulk Spirit Operations – particular focus on cask filling and disgorging operations
  • Identify and participate in training to assist in your own personal development and to improve productivity. This will include CompEx capability with knowledge of working within hazardous areas covered by the ATEX regulations.
  • Provide first-line asset support for any breakdowns on the Poniel site
  • Be proactive, ‘walk the floor’, challenge under performance, monitor trends and respond appropriately with an effective solution
  • Provide cover for shift MST as and when required to ensure engineering support for all site operations
  • Adhere to all Health and Safety regulations within the workplace and strive to eliminate any potential hazards before they become accidents or incidents

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must have served a recognised apprenticeship as a minimum.
EXPERIENCE
  • It is essential that you are competent in your core field (Mechanical or Electrical). However, it is desirable that you can demonstrate an aptitude in your non-core field.
  • Same or comparable position in the spirit industry or FMCG
FUNCTIONAL SKILLS
  • Demonstrable experience working safely in a manufacturing / processing environment within a maintenance department or comparable technical services team.
  • Working in a World Class environment delivering proven process improvements.
  • High level of understanding of mechanical systems – chain drives / power transmission / conveying systems
  • Knowledge of liquid handling / process equipment and machinery.
  • Excellent diagnostic and fault-finding skills.
ENGINEERING EXPERIENCE
  • Capable of working to a formal change control process. 
  • Experience/knowledge of conveying systems and fluid handling equipment
  • Competent in general electrical maintenance.
  • Comp EX Ex 11 qualified
  • Comp EX Ex 1-4 desirable, but not essential
  • Excellent mechanical fitting techniques and skills.
  • High level of proficiency in maintaining
  • Mechanical drive – geared transmissions / roller and chain drives / heavy duty conveying systems
  • Fluid transfer – pumps / valves / pipe work / filling and disgorging systems
  • Hydraulics
  • Basic fabrication skills
